About Us

Diamond Light Source is the UK’s national 3rd generation synchrotron science facility. Life sciences is a significant strength at Diamond with structural biology being a major driver. Diamond currently has 7 world-class beamlines dedicated to macromolecular crystallography (MX) covering a diverse and unique set of capabilities. MX is complemented by dedicated beamlines for BIOSAXS, CD, X-ray imaging and spectroscopy, IR-micro-spectroscopy and the UK’s national Cryo-EM centre (eBIC), together creating a unique environment for integrative structural biology research.

The MX group at Diamond established the first dedicated synchrotron-based labs for X-ray fragment screening (XChem) and membrane proteins (MPL). In addition, the UK XFEL Hub provides a focus for XFEL work, engaging UK users in serial crystallography experiments around the world and directs UK developments at the SPB/SFX instrument at the European XFEL. The MX group has a strong software development programme which includes development of the DIALS integration software package, ISPyB/SynchWeb and automation pipelines.

About the Role

We now have an opportunity for a Principal Beamline Scientist (PBS) with a keen interest in beamline development, automation and/or structural biology, to join the macromolecular crystallography (MX) leadership team within Diamond to guide and develop the highly automated I03 beamline.

I03 is a state-of-the-art macromolecular crystallography beamline at Diamond, uniquely being capable of collecting data from crystalline samples up to biological containment level 3. It has a broad energy range and is equipped with a state-of-the-art detector (Eiger2 XE 16M) and very high capacity, rapid sample changer (BART). To date the team has led many of the developments for cryogenic sample automation and automated data collection.

In the role of PBS you will manage a small team of scientists to establish a programme which furthers the capabilities of I03 and MX at Diamond and contribute to the development and operation of the I03/MX group international user programme.

The post is underpinned by funding for a post-doctoral research associate to support research and development within the group subject to a suitable case being made. Furthermore, Diamond has a successful PhD programme and is partnered with a number of doctoral training centres across the UK providing the opportunity for PhD studentships. You will have access to well-equipped laboratories for structural and cellular biology at Diamond and within the Research Complex at Harwell.

Instrumentation and software development is facilitated by dedicated support from Diamond’s computing, engineering and scientific software groups as well as strategic partnerships with CCP4 and the recently established Rosalind Franklin Institute amongst others. Looking to the future, the expected Diamond-II upgrade programme of machine and beamlines presents a unique opportunity for the post holder to develop advanced methodologies in automation for MX and a complementary user programme for I03 for structural biology studies, including where appropriate exploiting the beamlines unique biological containment level 3 capability.

About You

You will hold appropriate first and higher degrees or demonstrate significant equivalent experience.

You will be a highly talented structural biologist or methods development expert, with expertise in macromolecular crystallographic techniques as applied at synchrotron beamlines, and a broad outlook in structural biology.

Experience of beamline instrumentation, experiment automation and/or sample environment equipment, biological containment environments, will benefit your application.

You will demonstrate skills in managing a small team, as well as a managing a budget and other resources for research and operations and upgrade projects.

You will have demonstrated ability to develop a research programme, and to lead significant projects.

You will display excellent interpersonal, communication and presentational skills, to interact effectively with staff and stakeholders at all levels.
