Kiel University and DESY intend to attract more qualified women for professorships.
The Centre for Structural Systems Biology (CSSB) has been established at the campus of Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY) in Hamburg (Germany) as an interdisciplinary research centre with partners from universities and non-university institutions. CSSB addresses challenges in molecular infection biology by structural biology methods.
DESY, a research center of the Helmholtz Association, is one of the world‘s leading centres for research with photons as well as particle, astroparticle and accelerator physics. The brilliant synchrotron radiation source PETRA III, the free-electron laser FLASH and the X-ray lasers at the European XFEL GmbH offer a wide range of research possibilities,
ranging from life sciences to the various fields of fundamental studies.
The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at Kiel University, in association with DESY, invite applications for the following joint position to be filled as soon as possible: Professorship (W3) in Structural Biology of Infectious Processes.
Within the interdisciplinary research environment of the CSSB, relevant molecular processes for various types of pathogens are studied. For this purpose, advanced imaging and diffraction techniques are applied that cover the entire resolution range from molecular details to the entire cells.
The joint professorship should focus on structural biology for infection processes with special emphasis on synchrotron and/or FEL radiation based methods. Experiences in the field of cryo-electron microscopy are of advantage.
The successful candidate will hold a university degree, Phd or doctorate, and has a proven track record of excellent research as a PostDoc, as a candidate for habilitation, or as a junior professor at a University or a research institute. We expect evidence of research excellence
by publications in high-ranking journals and acquisition of substantial third-party funding.
Preconditions for recruitment are according to Art. § 61 and § 63, section 1, of the Higher Education Act of the State of Schleswig-Holstein. The post-holder will be based at CSSB (DESY campus, Hamburg) and the appointment will be according to the leave of
absence model. The teaching obligation currently is 2 semester hours per week and includes both undergraduate and graduate level at the Department of Biology at CAU. For additional information, please contact Prof. Dr. Edgar Weckert (e-mail: email@example.com) or
Prof. Dr. Axel Scheidig (email: firstname.lastname@example.org).
Kiel University and DESY seek to increase the number of women in faculty positions and encourage applications from qualified women.
Female applicants will be given priority if their qualifications and achievements are equal to those of male applicants. Applications from handicapped scientists will receive priority in case of equal qualifications.
We explicitly encourage candidates with an immigration background to apply. Please also refrain from submitting photographs.
Applications for this vacancy are to be made in English and include a curriculum vitae, copies of academic certificates, publication list, information on teaching experience, first pages of the five most important publications within the last five years as well as details on the existing research strategy and third-party funding. We further expect details on a future
research strategy at CSSB using the available core facilities. Please also provide private and business addresses as well as telephone numbers. The closing date for applications is March 29th, 2018.
Applications have to be submitted as a single pdf document (smaller than 20 MB) via e-mail (email@example.com) to the Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Kiel University, D-24089 Kiel, Germany.
