The Life Science X-ray Scattering (LiX) beamline at National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) is seeking a post-doctoral researcher to help develop the technique of x-ray scattering-based scanning probe imaging. The LiX beamline supports x-ray scattering experiments on biological tissues using beam sizes of ~1 to 5 microns. This enables the possibility of using the scattering intensity from the underlying structures (such as myelin, cellulose and collagen) as a contrast mechanism to image biological tissues. This method requires further development to allow researchers to quickly extract quantitative information from the large amount of scattering patterns they collect from a wide variety of samples. Developing this capability will be the principal responsibility of the post-doc recruited.
The successful candidate will be participate in collaborative research with biologists to study the structure of plant cell walls, using the data collected at LiX and other beamlines at NSLS-II. The primary responsibilities of this position are to develop data analysis methods and to implement data analysis software. The software needs to be compatible with the Python-based NSLS-II control software framework developed by the NSLS-II Data Acquisition Management and Analysis (DAMA) group, and to provide capabilities for rapid extraction of characteristics from individual scattering patterns, visualization and statistical analysis of these quantities, and integrative data analysis using scattering and fluorescence imaging data. Other responsibilities include sample preparation, data collection with beamline staff and collaborating users, and providing on-the-fly data processing support.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ph.D. in biophysics, physics, structural biology or related fields.
- Ability to develop software for data analysis, using Python and C/C++.
- Experience with software parallelization using CPUs or GPUs.
- Experience with Linux operating systems.
- Able to work in a team environment and self-motivated.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Experience in data collection at a synchrotron beamline
- Knowledge of the structure of plant cells and their growth
- Experience with data analysis for x-ray scattering data from biological tissues
- Experience with machine learning
- Experience with sample preparation of biological tissues for imaging
