Research Scientist – Electrodynamics, X-ray Optics

The National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) at Brookhaven National Laboratory seeks a scientist to support the development and implementation of an advanced suite of synchrotron radiation, X-ray optics, and wave propagation simulation software tools to enable realistic start-to-end (source to detector) simulations of experiments at light source facilities.  This includes work on software architecture design, establishing a proper framework, and user interfaces.  The candidate is also expected to participate in the design of new beamlines and insertion devices, as well as in some commissioning activities on existing beamlines at NSLS-II, in particular, for performance characterization and validation of simulation software, or to help in beamline optimization.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • PhD in Physics, Computer Science or related field
  • Solid foundation in Electrodynamics
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience with X-ray Optics
  • Demonstrated experience with Numerical Methods (in particular FFT, multi-dimensional integration and optimization methods)
  • Experience programming in C/C++
  • Ability to interact effectively in a team environment with a diverse group of technical staff.

 

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Experience at a light source facility (storage ring or free-electron laser);
  • Demonstrated analytical calculation skills

Experience programming in Python and knowledge of popular “3rd party” Python libraries

  • Experience with collaborative development and/or support of large scientific software projects
  • Good communication skills.

 

Other Information:

  • This position is a two (2) year project appointment.

 

  • The selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate scientific level dependent upon depth and breadth of relevant knowledge and skills that he or she brings to the position, as well as the amount of relevant experience.
