Website EuropeanXFEL European XFEL

European XFEL is an international non-profit company located in the Hamburg area in Germany. It operates a 3.4 km-long X-ray laser, which produces X-rays of unique quality for studies in physics, chemistry, the life sciences, materials research and other disciplines. The diverse scientific facilities at European XFEL enable scientists from across the globe to carry out a wide range of experimental techniques.

The position

With the European XFEL committed to hard X-ray photons with energies above 20 keV, future detector development must involve research on sensor materials with higher quantum efficiency than silicon in the above mentioned energy range. Within this framework, European XFEL has started a three year exploratory phase to identify viable sensor candidates for future detectors.

  • The researcher responsibilities will include:
  • establish a program for sensor qualification in the laboratory and at the beamlines;
  • work with the detector technologies currently used in the facility to evaluate new sensor prototypes (AGIPD, LPD, JUNGFRAU);
  • take active part in performance qualification, both in the laboratory and in dedicated beamtimes, in collaboration with EuXFEL partners;
  • take a leading role in the analysis of collected data and in the assessment of the performances of analysed materials and systems.

Requirements

  • Master or PhD degree in physics or engineering or equivalent professional experience
  • Experience with detector systems operation and characterization is required
  • Knowledge on sensor characterization and qualification will be considered an asset
  • Programming skills (Python and/or C/C++ will be considered assets)
  • Good communication skills and ability to work in a multi-lingual and multi-disciplinary team with English as working language
