The Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source in Ithaca, NY has immediate openings for Research Support Specialist I positions to assist and support experimenters from around the world in our X-ray research facility. These position involves designing, building, maintaining, and troubleshooting complex scientific equipment, as well as interacting with experimenters from many different backgrounds, supporting their research, ensuring proper safety protocols are followed, and providing instructions and service to staff and visitors to the lab.
We seek candidates who have a team-based approach and mindset and enjoy working in a technical laboratory. Through working with other support specialists, scientists, and supervisors, the RSS I will be trained on procedures and develop the skill sets necessary to handle multiple tasks efficiently and provide the best support possible to our researchers. These positions involves some routine tasks, but is mostly comprised of long-term projects, equipment maintenance, design, and troubleshooting, and supporting researchers. Long term projects may be in the following areas: mechanical design and assembly, electronics, X-ray detectors, safety, ultra-high vacuum systems, motion control, PLC design and programming, integrating hardware and software. The people in these positions will work under general supervision; many aspects of the job involve working within a group, but must be self-motivated and work efficiently individually as well. CHESS operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, when researchers are visiting; some evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays are required.
A Bachelor’s degree in a scientific or technical field or equivalent work experience
is required. An additional 1-2 years of experience in a laboratory setting or technical support role is preferred. The ideal candidate will communicate clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing; have excellent people skills; and have a work history demonstrating strong motivation, reliability, troubleshooting skills, and good judgement. Some physical work is required at times; candidates must be able to lift 50 pounds. Previous experience in any of the following areas is highly desirable: data collection/analysis; vacuum systems; electronics; motion control; programmable logic controllers (PLCs); computer networking, Linux, EPICS (Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System); safety oversight (especially, but not limited to, chemical laboratories); hands-on fabrication or assembly work; mechanical design, using Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or other similar 3D Parametric CAD program.
