The Canadian Light Source (CLS) is a national research facility, one of the largest science projects in our country’s history, producing the brightest light in Canada—millions of times brighter than even the sun—used by more than 1,000 scientists from around the world every year in ground-breaking health, agricultural, environment, and advanced materials research.
The Canadian Light Source Inc. (CLS) is seeking a Science Director. The CLS is Canada’s national centre for synchrotron research. Located at the University of Saskatchewan in the City of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, the CLS is a world-class, state-of-the-art facility that is advancing Canadian science, enhancing the competitiveness of Canadian industry and contributing to the quality of life of people around the world. Launched in 1999 and officially opened in 2004, the synchrotron is one of the largest science projects in Canadian history and was the product of an unprecedented collaboration of federal, provincial and municipal governments and agencies, universities from across the country and industry.
The CLS is committed to being a world-leading centre of excellence in synchrotron science by working with the scientific community to promote the use of synchrotron light, industrial partnerships and innovation, and engaging in scientific and educational outreach. Currently, the CLS has 250 employees including scientists, engineers, technicians and administrative personnel.
The Science Director provides leadership in the development and implementation of CLS’ science strategy, enabling world class research using high brilliance synchrotron radiation resulting in the publication of scientific discoveries and innovations. They will report directly to the CEO and provide strategic input and leadership related to the scope of services offered by CLS to industrial, academic, and collaborating users with respect to storage ring services, beam line services, analytical services, interpretative services, and design of growth beam lines and specialized end stations.
Working in collaboration with the CEO and Executive Management, the Science Director will motivate and lead a high performing scientific management team, ensuring the infrastructure of systems, processes and personnel required for designing, building, commissioning and operating world-class photon beam lines are aligned with the strategic plan of the CLS. The Science Director leads collaborations with researchers and research project sponsors at national and international scientific and academic institutions in order to develop, expand and publish scientific discoveries and innovations in synchrotron science and related fields of science. They are the liaison with universities and collaborating institutions with respect to user needs and beamline development to foster research and development efforts in synchrotron science and the related fields of study. The Science Director leads academic and industrial user engagement efforts, managing relations between diverse stakeholders in academia, industry and government.
A Ph.D. in a relevant scientific discipline is required along with a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience, most recently in a senior leadership role. A combination of education and experience may be considered. Familiarity with synchrotron science and/or experience working in a user facility would be considered an asset.
The position is a term appointment, initially for 3 years, with the potential for renewal. The position represents an excellent opportunity for a mid-career researcher with a strong science background and research profile looking to develop their leadership capability in preparation for a senior leadership role.
