The X-ray Science Division (XSD) of Argonne National Laboratory enables world-class research using x-rays by operating beamlines with novel capabilities, developing cutting edge instrumentation and techniques, and pursuing research in the physical, chemical, environmental, life, and materials sciences. The XSD Microscopy Group is seeking a scientific associate to provides technical and operation support to the group.

The successful candidate will provide electronic, controls, and software support for beamline operation and development. The candidate will work with teams of scientific and engineering staffs on development and operation of advanced instrumentation, as well as installation and commissioning of new instruments. The position will develop and maintain beamline control systems, build and repair electronic assemblies, diagnose problem and repair equipment as needed. The position will act as the primary technical interface with other APS engineering and support groups.

Position Requirements

  • Experience in design, development, support, and operation of complex advanced instrumentation.
  • Knowledge of Linux based operating system, advanced analog & digital electronics, and computer control of positioners and detectors.
  • Knowledge of EPICS, caQtDM, and python scripting is desirable.
  • Knowledge of precision motion control systems and metrology used for encoded motion control is desirable.
  • Skills in troubleshooting, diagnostics, and independent judgments in solving technical problems.
  • Skills in team working environments with scientific, engineering, and support staffs.

Education and Experience Requirements:

RD1: Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent.

RD2: Bachelor’s Degree and 5+ years of experience, Master’s Degree and 3+ years experience, a Doctorate, or equivalent.
