The Laboratory of Biomolecular Structure (LBMS) is a state-of-the-art center for life-science imaging, just coming into operation at Brookhaven National Laboratory. LBMS provides support on single-particle and tomographic cryogenic Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) studies (https://www.bnl.gov/cryo-em/). The mission of LBMS is to accelerate dramatically our understanding of processes underlying Biology, including bio-energy, disease and fundamental molecular structures. The LBMS benefits from a location close to the world-leading X-ray-imaging and structural biology user facilities at National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS‑II).
We seek PhD-level scientist who will manage the electron microscopy our new cryo-TEMs, develop user programs, communicate with scientific and industrial user communities, to be an interface to manufacturers. Working closely with users, they will define optimal experimental design on sample preparation and automated data collection. They will provide guidance and service in data management and analysis.
Specifically, the successful applicant will manage a team of five staff who work as a team to operate the cryo-TEMs and ancillary equipment, perform routine maintenance and quality checks to ensure optimal operation. The electron microscopists will provide technical advice to investigators on sample preparation, and data collection. They will train new investigators in the principles and practice of cryogenic electron microscopy
Each successful candidate will be also expected to develop and to learn new technologies that will facilitate sample preparation, and data acquisition and analysis.
Selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate position level dependent upon depth and breadth of relevant knowledge and skills, as well as years of relevant experience.
- Ph.D. in structural biology or a related field.
- More than 6 years expertise in operating high-end cryo-TEM instruments such as Titan Krios.
- Experiences in high-resolution cryo-TEM data collection, analysis, structure-solving, and refinement for biomolecular structure.
- Cryogenic preparation of biological samples for single-particle or tomography work.
- Ability to communicate effectively and diplomatically
- Experience in managing a Cryo-TEM facility
- Experience in developing software for all levels of the atomic-resolution cryo-TEM process.
- Use of FIB/SEM to prepare and image cryogenic samples.
- Experience in scripting or programming for automation.
- Experience with fluorescence light microscopy.
- Strong organizational skills and methodical record-keeping.

We would like to hear of your success with the various software suites for data acquisition, and those for image processing, structure solving, and structure refinement. Finally, we would like to hear about your experiences in providing consulting and support to other researchers in employing cryo-TEM technologies for single-particle microscopy and tomography.
The cover letter should also describe experience leading a team to operate TEMs in an active research environment or user program.
