It operates a 3.4 km-long X-ray laser, which produces X-rays of unique quality for studies in physics, chemistry, the life sciences, materials research and other disciplines. The diverse scientific facilities at European XFEL enable scientists from across the globe to carry out a wide range of experimental techniques.

The Small Quantum Systems (SQS) group of the European XFEL is operating one of the six scientific instruments dedicated to the investigation of gas-phase samples with soft X-rays.

For the installation, commissioning and operation of a novel timestamping camera at the SQS instrument, we are looking for a

Scientist (f/m/d) for Electron and Ion Spectroscopy

The position

  • integration and operation of a Timepix3 camera for ion and electron velocity map
    imaging at MHz repetition rates
  • development of a hardware setup tuned specifically for the experimental conditions at
    SQS
  • implementation of online and offline analysis routines in collaboration with the EuXFEL
    data analysis group
  • design and conduction of proof-of-principle studies using the optical laser available at
    SQS
  • active role in all scientific projects employing the Timepix3 camera
  • development of own research program, ideally leading an own experimental campaign
    at SQS
  • participation in the development of next-generation detectors (Timepix4)
  • participation in user support

Requirements

  • PhD in experimental physics or a related area
  • experience with electron and ion spectroscopy (ideally velocity map imaging) using Xrays
    and/or femtosecond lasers
  • profound data analysis skills, ideally experience with correlation analysis
  • motivation to participate in the advancement and operation of an experimental station
    enabling forefront research at free-electron lasers
  • good communication skills and the ability to work in a multi-lingual, multidisciplinary team
