You will play a major role in the operation and further development of the Materials Science beamline, ID11, as well as participating in the other activities of the Structure of Materials group. High-energy X-ray diffraction and imaging form the core of the mission for the Materials Science beamline. User groups carry out atomic structure determination and refinement via single-crystal and PDF methods. There is also a well-established programme in grain mapping via DCT and 3DXRD. A new Eiger4M detector was recently installed at ID11, and this enables fast scanning XRDCT for images of local strains and orientations in polycrystals.

The suite of multiscale methods at ID11 can address a wide range of questions in materials science, for structural materials, micromechanics, and phase transformations, as well as in related fields (geosciences, chemistry, etc.). The successful candidate will be expected to take a leading role in developing their own research programme that highlights the possibilities offered by the instrumentation at ID11.

As the ESRF is a leading service facility, the role of providing excellent support to our scientific community will also play a key part in the post-holder’s function.


  • PhD in Materials Science, or Chemistry, or Physics, or a related discipline
  • At least 1 year of post-doctoral experience
  • The ambition to develop your own research projects, from proposals up to publications
  • Experience with high-energy X-ray diffraction/imaging, including data processing
  • Ability to interact with multi-disciplinary staff and facility users
  • Proficiency in English (working language at the ESRF)
