About Us

Diamond Light Source is the UK’s national synchrotron science facility. By accelerating electrons to near light-speed, Diamond generates brilliant beams of light from infra-red to X-rays which are used for academic and industry research and development across a range of scientific disciplines including structural biology, physics, chemistry, materials science, engineering, earth and environmental sciences.

About the Role

We now have an opportunity for a Software Engineer to join the Imaging group at Diamond. This role is a collaboration between Diamond and the National X-ray Computed Tomography research facility (http://nxct.ac.uk). The Imaging group at Diamond and NXCT facility support a broad user community in materials science and engineering, chemical processing, biomedical engineering, bio-mechanics, and geoscience.  An essential part of the operation of these facilities is to help support sample environment integration which is critical in helping to understand industrial and physical processes by providing control over measurements of these processes in smaller scale replicators.
As a Software Systems Engineer your task will be to work closely with a team of scientists and engineers at Diamond and NXCT to help integrate sample environments into the beamlines, understand the science needs and support the experiments when needed.

The Diamond NCXT Software Scientist will be responsible for:

  • Integration and commissioning of the sample environment into the DIAD, I12 and I13 beamlines.
  • Contributing to the development and commissioning of sample environments and additional capabilities for the user community.
  • Interaction with Diamond and NXCT staff and users as a dedicated contact for supported sample environments.
  • Supporting developments of other sample environments and developing a framework for integration of future sample environments.

What you need to succeed:

An enthusiasm for computing and science.

An ability to communicate effectively with a variety of groups and understand their needs.

Most of the applications are coded in C or built using the EPICS control system toolkit. C, Java and Python are also widely used. Training will be provided but experience in one of these languages and an ability to learn are essential.
