The African Light Source (AfLS) Foundation is mandated to drive the progress along the Roadmap towards the establishment of an Advanced Light Source on the African Continent. Many on the continent and beyond had been advocating for a Pan-African light source since the 90’s, where a first major milestone was via EBASI in 2000 (ebasi.org, Edward Bouchet-Abdus Salam Institute), at the formation of the African Laser Centre in 2001 (africanlasercentre.net).
The AfLS was formed in 2015, at the AfLS-1 Conference, generating the Grenoble Resolutions and AfLS Roadmap.
Thedevelopment of the Geopolitical Conceptual Design Report (CDR) for the African Light Source began at the AfLS2020 virtual event, and was launched in Dec 2024 at the AAS Conference in Abuja.
The CDR is one of the most significant documents envisaged for the Roadmap of the AfLS. This document concretises any conversation with African governments, Pan African organisations, and any national and international organisations. Its intended audience includes policy makers, politicians, academics, engineers, technicians, businesspersons, industrialists, financiers, strategic thinkers, all possible stakeholders and stakeholder organisations and of course, the general public.
