CONTEXT & JOB DESCRIPTION

ID19 is a 150 m-long beamline dedicated to high resolution X-ray imaging (radiography and microtomography) using partially coherent hard X-rays for enhanced sensitivity. The beamline combines a broad range of experimental setups with intense polychromatic illumination for fast phase contrast X-ray imaging: perfectly suited for in situ studies of materials and engineering devices using a broad selection of sample environments.

You will participate in the maintenance and development of the beamline, provide support to the beamline scientific staff and external scientific visitors, and closely interact with various ESRF support groups in seeking timely help for repairs and preventive maintenance tasks. Together with the beamline scientists, you will participate in the development and installation of instrumentation specific to the beamline.

Regular tasks include surveillance of correct functioning of ancillary equipment and indirect X-ray imaging detectors, management of sample shipment from users, and installation of sample environments for user experiments. In addition, during the synchrotron shutdown period you will be required to undertake essential repair tasks, preventive maintenance and if necessary installation of new equipment.

Your missions are the following:

  • Maintain the beamline in a functional and reliable state
  • Install or adjust equipment to meet the needs of each experiment
  • Document the operation of important beamline equipment
  • You may participate in the execution of commercial or user experiments
  • Participate in the conception, design, and installation of new equipment and systems on the beamline
  • Interact with support groups (mechanical, electronic, detector, sample environment, …) and subcontractors to carry out the above tasks

EXPECTED PROFILE

  • You should hold a technician degree (BSc, Licence, HND, HNC, BTS, DUT, Bachelor, Meister, Vordiplom, Perito, Laurea Triennale, Diplomatura, Ingenieria Técnica or equivalent)
  • Good technical skills in troubleshooting, assembling and installation of scientific equipment
  • Prior experience as a beamline or laboratory technician would be an advantage
  • Basic knowledge of computing, mechanics, electronic and vacuum equipment would be an advantage
  • Good organization and communication
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to machine simple parts would be an advantage
  • Experience in technical drawing and its associated software (ideally SOLIDWORKS) would be an asset
  • Training will be provided as necessary to acquire needed knowledge and skillsets
  • English proficiency (working language at the ESRF)

WORKING CONDITIONS
