ALS Director Dimitri Argyriou Announces New Leadership Structure

Dear colleagues,

Since I stepped into the role of ALS director in July, I’ve worked hand-in-hand with the ALS deputy team of Steve Rossi, Fernando Sannibale, Andreas Scholl, and Ashley White. Having seen the success of this organizational structure, I’m pleased to announce that Ashley’s interim role as deputy for strategy is now permanent, and Andreas’s position as deputy for science will have new responsibilities. Fernando and Steve will continue in their roles as deputy for accelerator operations and deputy for business operations, respectively. Ashley’s and Andreas’s portfolios are outlined below.

Deputy for Science: Andreas Scholl

Andreas will be responsible for executing the ALS’s scientific vision and will oversee Photon Science, comprising the Photon Science Operations and Photon Science Development groups. He will also be the primary liaison for the Scientific Advisory Committee and Proposal Study Panel and will oversee the proposal solicitation and review process, in partnership with ALS User Services Group Lead Tracy Mattox and Ashley. Andreas has broad and deep experience in research, scientific planning, and management at ALS at multiple levels of the organization, including as interim ALS director. He brings the perspective of a beamline scientist, many years of user service, and experience with staffing, budget, and resource prioritization.

Deputy for Strategy: Ashley White

Ashley will lead ALS strategic planning and oversee the Communications and User Services groups. She will also be the primary liaison for the Science Council, Participating Research Team Council, and IDEA Committee. In addition, she will continue part-time to support the development of strategic initiatives in the Energy Sciences Area Office. Ashley brings critical experience and perspective in strategic planning and communications for the ALS, ALS-U, and Energy Sciences Area, as well as a deep knowledge of the ALS. Her additional experience in materials science and public policy will be crucial as we envision and implement the ALS of the future.
