Amazing Aka adventure at the Taiwan Photon Source

NSRRC works hand in hand with the Golden Bell Award winner to successfully blend entertainment with scientific education in an exciting animated film “Aka’s adventure: the secret of light”.

The National Synchrotron Radiation Research Center (NSRRC) successfully hosted the “Taiwan Photon Source 2018 Open House Science Event” – a special film screening of the fine animated movie “Aka’s adventure: the secret of light” on Saturday August 18, 2018. Minister of Science and Technology Chen Liang-gee (陳良基), the winner of the Best Animation Program Golden Bell Award Li-Wei Chiu (邱立偉) and nearly 600 attendees gathered for this special event.

NSRRC is dedicated, not only to the pursuit of cutting edge research, but also to making science more accessible to the general public. This animated film is a first attempt by the NSRRC to reveal the achievements of frontier science using entertainment media. They have demonstrated how the distance between science and the general public can be shortened and brought to a whole new level. The seeds of scientific knowledge can easily be planted in the minds of youngsters.

Dr. Gwo-Huei Luo new director of NSRRC

NSRRC BOT Member, Dr. Bon-Chu Chung, and NSRRC User, Prof. Chien-Hong Cheng Elected as Academician

Dr. Gwo-Huei Luo will officially assume the position on August 1, 2018 as the 5th Director of the National Synchrotron Radiation Research Center (NSRRC), Taiwan. The NSRRC Board of Trustees started searching for, and selecting, a new director in January, 2018. Dr. Luo has earned recognition and commendation from the Board for his management experiences and his research and development efforts, particularly, in accelerators.

Dr. Luo received his MS and PhD degrees in Electrical Engineering at University Wisconsin, Madison, USA. Over the years, Dr. Luo has devoted himself to his professional career and become an expert on accelerator physics, microwave engineering, and cryogenic superconducting engineering. Because of his highly-recognized contributions to accelerators, he has served as member of Asian Committee for Future Accelerator (ACFA) and in the international advisory committee of several synchrotron facilities worldwide, such as ILSF, HEPS, SSRF and WHPS. He also served on the Review Committee of the Super-KEKB, an upgrading project of KEKB electron-position collider. In addition, he has been actively promoting and involved in the International Particle Accelerator Conference (IPAC), serving in International Organizing Committee and/or Scientific Program Committee since 2010.

Discovery of the novel green fluorescent protein by NSRRC

Scientist Dr. Chun-Jung Chen and Research Assistant Mr. Yen-Chieh Huang of the National Synchrotron Radiation Research Center collaborated with the researchers at the University of the Philippines – Diliman to analyze the three-dimensional structure and functional characteristics of the novel green fluorescent protein asFP504 isolated from a soft coral species, Alcyonium sp. found at the Taklong Island, Guimaras, Philippines. The results of the study were published and selected as the cover story on the Philippine Journal of Science in March, which is considered as one of the representative research results of the Southward Policy of NSRRC.

NSRRC User, Jennifer Kung elected as a MSA Fellow

First female scientist ever awarded MSA fellowship in Asia.

NSRRC user, Jennifer Kung is among the 11 new elected fellows for 2018, announced by the Mineralogical Society of America (MSA) Council at its Fall Council Meeting in Seattle, WA, USA. She is the only recipient from Taiwan, as well as the first female scientist ever awarded MSA fellowship in Asia.

Prof. Kung is an Associate Professor in Earth Science at National Cheng-Kung University. She runs “Mineral and Rock Physics Lab” to investigate the behaviors of earth materials under high pressure and high temperature using the knowledge of crystal chemistry, mineral physics to understand the interior of the Earth. The major research methods she employs include X-ray diffraction, vibrational spectroscopy and ultrasonic measurements in conjunction with high pressure facilities, like large volume high pressure apparatus or diamond anvil.

Bing-Joe Hwang received National Chair Professorship from Ministry of Education

Exceptional award for this NSRRC User

The Ministry of Education recently announced the recipients of the 21^st National Chair Professorships and the 61^st Academic Awards. Prof. Bing-Joe Hwang, a long-term user of NSRRC, was given the National Chair Professorship in the category of Engineering and Applied Sciences. Prof. Hwang is a Chair Professor in Chemical Engineering at National Taiwan University of Science and Technology. He is also an adjunct scientist of NSRRC. His research interests include electrochemistry, nanomaterials, nanoscience, fuel cells, lithium ion batteries, solar cells, sensors, and interfacial phenomena.

NSRRC Researchers receive Taiwan’s 2017 Presidential Science Prize

Established in 2001, the biennial Presidential Science Prize recognizes innovative researchers who have made outstanding contributions in the fields of mathematics and physical sciences, life sciences, social sciences, and applied sciences. It is considered the nation’s highest scientific honor.

According to the Eligibility and Selection Process of the Prize, the Committee is composed of 15 members, including the President of Academia Sinica as the chair, and the Minister of Science and Technology as the vice chair. This year three winners stood out among 13 nominees: Academician Chien-Te Chen (NSRRC) in mathematics and physical sciences, Academician Andrew H.-J. Wang (Academia Sinica) in life sciences, and Dr. Douglas Yu (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company) in applied sciences. The awarding ceremony will be held in the Presidential palace and presented by the President in November.
